Chesterfield CAMRA’s Summer Pub of the Season Award has gone to The Nettle, at Milltown, near Ashover.Pictured in front of the infamous pink facade (from left to right) is the newly appointed Chairman of Chesterfield & District Branch of CAMRA, Andy Thackeray, Licensee of The Nettle, Darren Toplis and, presenting the award, Marc Taylor, who nominated this excellent pub at the March Branch meeting.
On the presentation evening branch members were treated to some excellent Farmers Blonde and Farmers Bitter, soaked up by a hearty beef stew and rosemary dumplings. Thanks to all at the Nettle for making us so welcome!
When the author was a young drinker, “The Nettle” was called “The Greyhound”. In the dark years before that, it was the “Well Run Nettle” (named for a champion running dog).
A bus load of Chesterfield CAMRA members arrived on Wednesday 21st May to present Darren Toplis with his well deserved certificate for Pub of the Season – the certificate promptly taking pride of place on the wall.
The Nettle is famed for its Bradfield Brewery Farmers Beers – the Blonde and the Bitter being on, and greatly enjoyed by our party. As well as its beer, the Nettle is noted for its food, from snacks to more formal meals, and occasional themed food evenings.
While the Nettle emphasises its food, the drinker is not neglected. Its public bar is basic and welcoming and we noted an excellent pork pie from Armstrongs of Bakewell on the bar when our walking party called there one Sunday!
As part of the Ashover Triangle, (the others being the Old Poets’ Corner - home of Ashover Brewery and winner of many awards, the Black Swan previous Pub of the Season, and the Crispin), the Nettle is part of one of the most concentrated good beer areas in Derbyshire.
The Nettle can be reached from Chesterfield by Hulley’s 63 bus, and from Clay Cross by Hulley’s 64 bus on Mondays – Saturdays, during the day.
